One evening in 1908, instead of going for a drink or to the Bordello, a man goes to see a film and turns into a movie buff overnight. The man in

question is Franz Kafka. "Went to the movies. Wept." Franz Kafka had a desire to «seize» fleeting cinematographic images. Hanns Zischler dealt

with Kafka’s nocturnal adventures in his book «Kafka goes to the movies». Here, using contemporary footage (Paris, train journeys, crossing Berlin

etc.), he reveals and recreates the aesthetic context of early film, layer by layer, rendering audible and visible in the present what is past and lost,

by taking it out of the darkrooms of the early 20th century and bringing it to the surface with digital film.

The session will be led by professional documentary filmmakers, Alice Nelson (winner of Scottish BAFTA for Best Short Film 2007) and Doug Aubrey (co-director of Autonomi Films and Project-Trainer for Diversity Films). This is summer camp with a difference. Girls aged from 8 to 18 learn how to express their individuality through rock music. They have one week to form a band, choose an instrument and write a song. The film focuses on several recruits: Laura, a Korean adoptee obsessed by death metal, Misty, who is emerging from a life of homelessness and gang activity and eight-year-old Amelia who writes rock songs about her dog Pipi. In an orphanage in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, children study the ancient Uighur tradition of tightrope walking. Uighurs are the largest Muslim denomination in China but the children are forbidden to openly profess their religion. Petr Lom follows the youngsters as they undergo their intensive daily training and schooling, giving insights into their personal struggles and achievements. This is thoughtful and considerate filmmaking that captures the survival of a distinctive culture within a political regime which limits freedom of expression. Escaping his cruel master, Oliver falls in with a gang of pickpockets, headed by the creepy Fagin (Lon Chaney). Kindly Mr. Brownlow, Oliver's real grandfather, tries to help the lad but evil Bill Sykes complicates matters. Neil Brand, who recently worked with Paul Merton on his "Silent Clowns" series for BBC4, will accompany the screening on piano followed by a Q&A session.

Hand in Hand – Bridge over the Wadi (Arabic: يداً بيد – جسر عبر الوادي‎; Hebrew: יד ביד – גשר על הוואדי‎) is the third joint Arab-Jewish primary school in Israel, founded in 2004 by the Hand in Hand: Center for Jewish Arab Education in Israel, which also runs three other bilingual schools in Israel. It is located in Kafr Qara, an Arab village in the Wadi Ara area.

In its first year, 2004-2005, the school had 105 students, from kindergarten to grade 3; in the 2005-2006 year, there are 180 students, from kindergarten to grade 4. 50% of the students are Arabs, and 50% – Jewish.

The school's students come from many settlements in the area, including Kafr Qara, 'Ara, Ar'ara, Baqa al-Gharbiyye, Qazir-Harish, Pardes Hanna-Karkur, Ein Iron, Givat Ada, and others. The school is the subject of a 2008 documentary, "Bridge Over the Wadi."[1]

As in all Hand in Hand schools, Bridge over the Wadi has an equal number of Arab and Jewish students; each class has two teachers, one Arab and one Jewish, the school has two co-principals, Arab and Jewish (currently Nuha Khatieb and Yochanan Eshchar).

The school teaches bi-lingually, in Arabic and Hebrew; the students' achievements in both languages are comparable to the achievements of students in single-language schools in Israel.

The school exposes the students to the three cultures: Jewish, Muslim and Christian, and demonstrates in a straight-forward and practical way the principles of democracy and social equality.

 

 

The idea of the school started with a group of 10 Arabs and 10 Jews from the Wadi Ara area, as a reaction to the October 2000 riots. Their assumption was that joint education for their children would be an effective way to overcome the violence and hatred.

The Head of the Local Council of Qafr Kara offered the group a building at the end of the village, originally built for the local high school. In 2004 the Israeli Ministry of Education approved the founding of the school at that location.

“My name is Assaf and I’ll be going to the Jewish-Arab school,” the older one says. “I think it’s a good school, because you learn a lot of good things there. But on the other hand, there are Arabs there.”

The camera then peeks inside the home of one of those Arabs, curly-haired Amina. Asma, her mother, says, “When I grew up, I was told to hate Jews.” She continues: “When my daughter grew up and told me ‘I hate Jews,’ I thought, ‘Why should she grow up the way I did?’ ”

Just what Arab and Jewish children in Israel should grow up knowing and believing about each other is at the heart of this quiet film directed by Barak Heymann and Tomer Heymann, Jewish filmmakers who are also brothers. They captured a year in the life of third-grade students, their parents and their teachers at the Hand in Hand Bridge Over the Wadi school, located in an Arab section of the Wadi Ara region in the middle of Israel.

Started in 2004 with 100 students in kindergarten through third grade, the school has grown to more than 200 students up to sixth grade, split evenly between Arabs and Jews. Its goal is to teach both Arabic and Hebrew and both Jewish and Muslim religion and culture.

“In Israel, when people saw it, they all had different conclusions,” Barak Heymann, 32, who lives in Tel Aviv, said in an interview. “The Israelis say we are pro-Arab, the Arabs say we are pro-Jewish,” which led him to conclude that the film struck the right note.

“It’s about being human and fighting for the right of the next generation not to be afraid of each other,” Mr. Heymann said.

By now the film has been shown at several festivals around the world and won a handful of awards.

It is part of “Global Voices,” a new series of internationally themed documentaries from filmmakers worldwide. The series is produced by Independent Television Services International for broadcast on PBS World, a digital channel.

The Heymann brothers have made films together and independently. Tomer, 37, won an audience award at the Berlin Film Festival in 2006 for “Paper Dolls,” which examines the lives of a group of transsexual Philippine immigrants in Israel. In the past few years, Barak has produced documentaries for Israeli television, including the well-received “Zorki,” about a mother’s secret affair.

What becomes quickly evident in the unnarrated, almost hourlong “Bridge Over the Wadi” is that the children adapt more easily than the adults to difference. They do not talk much about this grand cultural experiment; they giggle and fumble with one another’s languages, go to amusement parks together and attend bilingual slumber parties.

The adults, though, spend a lot of time grappling out loud with what it all means. “I’m afraid we’ll burden our kids with our opinions, sensitivities, pain and perceptions,” Ido, a Jewish father, says at a parent meeting.

Referring to her son, Moni, a Jewish mother, says, “I went out and told Yoav’s father that in my opinion the Arab families go home and say, ‘What suckers these Jews are.’ ” She eventually takes her son out of the school. “They let their children say ‘Allah is great’ and kneel down,” she says. “I’m a total atheist, but I’m Jewish, and people died sanctifying God’s name because they wouldn’t kneel down.”

 

Asma keeps her options open. “If I see my children become like Jews, I’ll simply take them and go home,” she says in an interview.

Assaf brings Bashar, who is Arabic, home for a play date of video games and plates piled high with spaghetti. Bruria, Assaf’s grandmother, begins quizzing Bashar. Do they get along in school? Do Bashar’s parents tell him about the terrorist attacks in Israel?

Assaf and Bashar seem unperturbed by the questions, twirling their spaghetti. Assaf says Bashar’s parents “probably don’t want him to be scared” about the terrorist attacks.

“I think it’s an attempt to create a school with people who are actually our enemies,” the grandmother says to the camera.

The children ignore her. They go outside and duel with plastic swords. Afterward they climb into a narrow twin bed, one at each end, and snuggle under a Bugs Bunny comforter.

"Vadinin üzerindeki köprü" olarak anılıyordu.

Araplar ve Yahudileri buluşturması beklenen bir proje için simgesel bir isim. Öğretmenler, anne babalar ve Orta Doğu'da karma okulları savunan

Yad-be-Yad (El ele) gurubu gibi girişimlerde heyecan hakimdi, çünkü ağırlıklı olarak İsrailli Araplar'ın yaşadığı bir bölgede ilk kez iki dilden eğitim

veren bir okul kurulmuştu.

Ancak Barak ve Tomer Heymann kardeşler tarafından çekilen‘Vadinin Üzerindeki Köprü' belgeselinin de gösterdiği gibi, bu gayretli proje daha

"Vadinin Üzerindeki Köprü", çocukların çevrelerindeki yetişkinler dünyasının korkularından ve

kuşkularından; politikanın ve gündelik gerçeğin sınırlarından nasıl sıyrıldıklarını ve kendilerine özgü bir anlaşma ortamı yarattıklarını yorumsuz bir

biçimde sergiliyor.

Çocuklar sorularını doğallıkla ve açıkça soruyorlar, kimseyi dışlamıyorlar.

Okul arkadaşlarının İsrailli veya Arap olmasının onlar için bir önemi yok.

Çocuklar önyargı tanımıyorlar.

Kuşkularıyla başa çıkmasını yetişkinler de öğreniyor.

Örneğin Arap öğretmen Sabrine'nin anne babalar ve eğitim kurulu karşısında kendisini

kanıtlaması gerekmiş, ama sonunda herkes, zaman zaman zor sınavlardan geçseler de tartışmaların projenin gerekli bir parçası olduğunu kabul

etmiş.

Kararı kendileri verdiler.

Bu eğitim projesinin amacı çocuklara sadece ders belletmek değil, aynı zamanda da bunun mümkün olabileceğini, bütün

"Vadinin Üzerindeki Köprü"ye göndermek için okula başvuran anne babaların sayısı iki katına çıkmış.

Film ilk kez 2006 yılı sonunda Amsterdam'da yapılan belgesel film festivalinde Avrupalı izleyiciye sunuldu.

diyalogun çocuklar arasında şimdiden gerçekleştiğini görmek izleyicileri çok etkilemiş olmalı ki film Amsterdam'da Halk Ödülü'nü aldı.

Among the scenic hills of the Galilee, Arab villages sit cheek by jowl with Jewish hamlets, but as is often the case in this troubled region, it is politics rather than geography that sets the distance between places and people. Bridge over the Wadi, an elementary bilingual school established by Arab and Jewish parents, aims to overcome this distance. But in a context where each community insists
on holding on to its history and narrative of belonging and amidst the ongoing national conflict, this noble, and somewhat revolutionary initiative has more than
a few hurdles to overcome. Letting the events of the first year of the school unfold in front of our eyes, this documentary enables us to see these obstacles through the eyes of parents, teachers and children from all sides. Without making judgments and with no pre-set agenda, the film provides a fascinating lesson in the current history of the conflict.

Barak Heymann, one of the film's directors will be attending both screenings of this film. He will take part in the post screening discussion at SOAS on Tuesday 13 November, and a Q&A on Wednesday 14 November following the screening at Odeon Swiss Cottage.

The screening on Tuesday 13th November will be followed by a discussion with Barak Heymann, Annabelle Sreberny and Sharif Hikmat Nashashibi.

Annabelle Sreberny is Professor of Global Media and Communications a the Centre for Media and Film Studies at SOAS. Her areas of expertise are Iran, diaspora, gender, globalization and democratization.

Sharif Hikmat Nashashibi, a British-Palestinian journalist, is chairman and co-founder of Arab Media Watch, an independent, non-profit watchdog set up in 2000 to strive for objective coverage of Arab issues in the British media.

Üzerine atılan pisliklerle ilgisi olmadığını ve Cumhurbaşkanı’nın Meclis’in açılışında yanlış hedef gösterdiğini,


kendisinin medya tekeli yaratmadığını ve daima dürüst temiz bir gazete patronu olduğunu söyledi.
